Hi Marc!

Thank you for your interesting comment. You ask why they should. These people won’t get their promotion, because they got it all wrong. And that is why they need to wait 5-10 years or more. You cannot wait for a promotion. Just by having a promotion as a goal, you have failed your leadership intentions. As a leader you are obligated to get the best out of the people around you. You are supposed to make other people good. You are supposed to practice how you can become an even better leader, so you can produce even more good people. If you practice leadership and grow as a leader, there is nothing stopping you, and the promotion will come sooner than later. The promotion is not a goal in itself, but rather recognition of your former work as a leader. My goal is to be the best leader possible, not to take over the role of my boss. Leadership skills are something you can use every day. I am coaching my wife and motivating her to do great at her master’s degree, trying to get her to see that yes she can. You need your leadership skills in many areas of your life, in sports, in politics, in life itself. There are so many reasons why they should, not just for personal gain, but for the well being of others around them. The real question is; why shouldn’t they?

"During the past 15-20 years I have met a lot of managers and leaders that just do their job day in and day out. I always ask myself; why do they not practice to become an even better leader?"

A better question: why should they?

Those managers/leaders, how long did it take for them to get where they are? 5 years? 10 years? If they have to wait 10 years for one promotion, god knows how long they'll have to wait for the next one. So... why practice something they'll never use?

Weeeeeell it might be just the attitude of those leaders you briefly mentioned above.

"I got this job, now I'm content. My education barely got me here, and I won't do anything else now, because the salary is decent, and I get to decide things."

Lack of ambition, so to say. Seen it in a lot of other jobs I had.

No book suggestion at hand, sorry. You do get a rating from me though, hope that helps. :)
