I have decided to take up the challenge of one of our new values to take on a social responsibility. This could be anything from keeping the sidewalk clean, helping less fortunate, volunteer or anything that makes you take a stand. So I did. I have currently been going to political meetings for a couple of weeks and I feel home. That is why I want to share this experience with you as I think it is relevant to this blog.

Engage to Recharge
I have been a father of two, I have a demanding job and I thought there were no place for exchanging relaxing time with engaging time. So what do I experience all of a sudden? I experience an energy boost, I am getting to use my mind for something else than work and family. I am getting mental input and I suddenly have something new to discuss with my wife. I feel that my life is aligning even a little more. For sure I am happy to start with but in life I have learned one thing…

…Do something bigger than you
It feels nice to do something that isn’t selfish, something to help others in whatever way we chose. I do believe that any human has the capacity of doing something great for others. And you as well hold this capacity. “Always set the trail, never follow the path” – Unkown.

Basic Human Needs
So why is it vital to engage? I need to tell you a story to explain this. My wife is a wonderful woman, and she hates to bother other people. She suddenly needed a favor from a family member abroad to get hold of some books. For days she walked around dreading the moment when she needed to ask for this favor. I then told her, people love the feeling of being useful, when you ask for help and this favor is something that they can master as well. Humans love the feeling of being useful to others. So do not be afraid to ask for help! But that is not quite the point.

By being useful to others you suddenly have more meaning in your life. This is why engaging in volunteer work or similar activities are such great benefit to your mental health. I am strongly advising you to take a stand and do something for the greater good.

But in all the politics one single topic has caught my attention. Kristin Clement , a former minister is lashing out on Norwegians work moral. The explosion in welfare expenses in Norway is partly caused by low work moral, and immigration worker are praised for their high level of work moral. It is a question about moral and values she says.

Another political scientist and author, Simen Sætre claims that another class distinction is developing, and that Norwegians is the “leisure class” and immigrants are the “servant class” Norwegians do not want low status jobs, and would rather collect welfare. This tendency is supported by senior researcher Jon Rogstad from the Institute of Social Research.

“Yes, this is clearly a trend. Within certain industries, we see that fewer and fewer Norwegians want a job – and that they in fact prefer to go on welfare.”

Norwegians work 430 hours less now than before we started to get income from oil, this is going in the same directions as rich oil producing Arabic countries, where immigrants is the “servant class” According to Sætre.

This is very interesting reading, and I like to blame management for failing to teach value and work moral to employees. I have been managing more than 100 people in my managing career and I can count all the lazy ones on one hand. I believe that less than 5 % have been slackers. I have been working with tech people most of my life and they have a natural interest and drive for the product or service provided. But when I recap the cleaning staff is foreign, the taxi driver is foreign and the carpenters are foreign. I’ll guess we need to embrace that workers want to come to Norway and do the jobs that we obviously won’t do.

Still managers have a responsibility to teach values to their employees, a will to succeed in the future. If you decide to go on welfare, you probably will have a hard time getting back onto the rat race. I am raised in a family that would rather starve to death then accepting welfare. So how can we teach such skills and values? How can we prevent employees to be sick if the task list is including boring jobs?

I like to imagine the future for my employees. I want them to visualize the future with a great resume and the future without one. If you hold a “shit job” for 2-3 years with an excellent resume you will most likely get a better job next time.

I also feel that family values need to be evaluated. I see parents running errands for their kids, driving them to soccer practice, to school, to friends. And with one SMS kids get their own chauffeur in no time. I heard a story recently about a teen that volunteered to stand at a drinking station serving water to runners at a local race. After 30 minutes he sent a message that this was enough work from his side and he wanted to go home. The race had not yet started… Get the kids walking… I watched a local soccer practice for 20 minutes and it had not yet started because everyone was late. I was astonished about this as I can still remember my first practices with this team, if we where late we would have to run during the practice or sit out. And now people where walking in 20 minutes late. What is going on I asked, where is the discipline? If we demand them to be on time, they won’t show, and we will have to cancel games!

But to the bottom line, what can we as managers do, and you as parents do to help creating a hard working generation? I hope all my employees will cherish a hard day’s work, and learn the joy of getting things done.

This is a question all Americans are pondering about these days. At least all Americans should think about this, and take a stand. I believe in democracy, but democracy is dependent on enough voters. So take a stand and vote. I live in Norway, and follow the election from the outside. My impression is that this is a choice between something new or let history repeat itself. John McCain seems like a man of action, a hardball that won’t let anybody mess with him. On the other hand Barack Obama seems like a man of softer value. I believe Obama presents the White House to coaching. And coaching might be what America needs. I cannot see what McCain would add to the White House but a four year long wait for the next election.

How can this influence my life? Why would I care about an American election? First of all for those McCain voters out there Norway is a country next to Russia. I do not need an American President with a tougher line to foreign politics. I do not fear Russian politics or a new cold war, but there is no need to challenge the faith. From my point of view Russian leaders or even Iranian leaders seems more capable of creating world peace, that your current President, or potentially republican follower. Obama seems more like a listener, like a coach who is willing to listen to the world around him. And listeners find solutions. I believe that the optimism in American economics will rise with Obama, not necessary because he is a better leader, but because he represents something new. He is a great motivator and an inspiration, great qualities of a true leader. The USA has great impact on the rest of the world, at warfare, at human aid and in technology. I need a motivated, inspired and upcoming USA, not a paranoid power machine in need of anger management. For me Obama represent a great leader with all the right values of a great coach.

I am taking a stand; Vote!

I have voted at all elections in Norway since I could vote. Voting is very important, it is a right you have, and I bet you’ll miss that when it is gone. I do not care who you pin you vote to, as long as you vote. Who you vote for is personal; but if you want to listen to my advice, let Barack Obama get your vote. As an outsider, looking in trough the American window it is a clear choice between a boss and a coach. A boss tells you what to do, a coach listen to you, and help you make your own choice.

If you believe that someone from Norway has nothing to say in this matter, well than you have to beat my score first at: http://www.aftenposten.no/reise/test_quiz/article2346001.ece (Place the states quiz.)
