“I want to be a leader” – Have you ever thought that it would be cool to be the boss? Is a leadership career tempting? Do you wonder what it takes to become a leader? I meet people that say that they have leadership ambitions all the time, but very few show their ambitions. I want to give you an advice. Leadership is a choice, and you can choose to follow my advice or not.
How to Become a Leader for Dummies
Start now! There might not be an opening at work right now, maybe not for a year, this does not mean that you should sit and wait. There are a few books I strongly recommend that you should buy now:
– Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us
This book written by Seth Godin is very interesting and you will get an insight to leadership and what leadership is all about. It is not the most essential book, so if you are broke you can buy it later on, but you should read it.
– The First 90 Days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels
This book is brilliant. It will walk you through your first months as a new leader, but if you are a slow reader like me, you should read this now before you become a leader. It will give you a head start.
– Happy Hour is 9 to 5
This book from Alexander Kjerulf is a must if you want your employees to be happy. And happy people produce more. You can download this book as a PDF file for free, but I do recommend you to buy it.
– Are You Ready to Succeed? Unconventional Strategies to Achieving Personal Mastery in Business and Life
Dr Rao Srikumar changed my life with this book. As a leader you will benefit greatly from this book.
If you have been following my blog for a while, you have probably noticed that I like to read about leadership. This is also my strongest advice, read a lot. I am surprised to see how many leaders that do not read about leadership. You should always learn as a leader.
Grab the Opportunities
Is your boss on a holiday? Is there a task that needs an extra watch dog? Do you work at a large company? I am sure there are areas that need a leader at the majority of companies around the world. You can start by learning about motivation and try to motivate your co-workers. You can take charge if your boss is at a meeting and the place seems to crumble. If you can make sure that the productivity is up even if the boss is not watching, you are on your way to become a leader.
A Leader is Not a Position
You do not have to be hired into a leader position, leader is something you become without the extra pay or the paper that tells you that you are hired. Leading is in the personality. If you read Tribes by Seth Godin, you will understand what I mean.
Participate in Other Activities
Do you have the chance to participate in a project? Can you be a spokesperson for the employees? Look for places where you can prove your leadership skills. Show your skills by volunteer to arrange teambuilding events. In this way you will be able to influence other people around you, and if you also provide excellent work it will be noticed.
Be a Role Model
As a leader you shall be an example to follow. Start by acting like a leader. Be on time, be prepared. Dress up once in a while. Focus on the results. Be a model employee.
If you follow these few advices you will soon become a leader. And remember you can still be a leader even if you are not the boss.
